Mango Twitch Overlays

Date: 2016 - Present

Role: Motion Graphics, 3D Environment, Animation, Compositing, VFX, Rendering

Over the last few years I've had the privledge of creating various overlays based on 'Super Smash Brothers Melee' for Twitch streamer Mang0. For the most part I've had complete creative freedom with production, allowing me to establish brand aesthetic, year over year. The central theme would always be focused around Fox McCloud and Falco Lombardi, Mang0's main characters that he had taken the the championship stage time and time again.

As time goes on, brainstorming ideas meant that I would eventually learn and adapt new techniques to the new themes, realizing methods shown in splash screens, gameplay overlays, chat graphics, notifications, etc. Below are a few examples of some of the more recent projects we have collaborated on.

Software used:
Blender
Photoshop
After Effects
Clip Studio Paint
Unreal Engine 5

MANGO 2025 PACKAGE

Primarily inspired by the aesthetic of both 'Arcane' and 'Arknights: Endfield', I chose to design a package based around a
juxtoposition of broken statues and high-tech sci-fi graphics. The first step was to take the existing rigs I had for the Fox
and Falco characters, and apply a procedural stone material that I strung together in the Blender shading panel. To fully sell
the look and to proper, deep shadows and ambient occlusion, I opted to render everything in the Cycles renderer, leveraging
the de-noiser found in the Pidgeon Tool Box plugin. Afterwards, everything was brought into After Effects for compositing,
adding in various motion graphics, real gameplay footage. and text, including a topographical map overlay, which was also
generated in Blender and rendered out to it's own file to be used as an asset everywhere else.

MANGO 2022 'SPACE BOOTCAMP' PACKAGE

On occasion, right before major tournaments, Mang0 would hold 'bootcamps' for top players; generally
a special streamed event with custom overlays and graphics. The theme this time around was based
around a 'space mission'. I took the liberty of modeling, texturing, and rigging a simple astronaut, retrofitting
Fox and Falco's heads onto the body. The background scene consists of the GreatFox ship, passing Arwing
fighters, and a multi-layer setup for Earth, put together with materials provided by NASA.

MANGO 2022 PACKAGE

For this set of overlays and graphics, we were on the fence for a while, figuring out if we wanted to run with a lively city aesthetic
or if we wanted to run something simpler, going with a more 'traditional' presentation for the overlays. Eventually we just decided
to do both, and swap things out at the streamer's discretion. The circular room set, featuring Fox and Falco standing at attention
is mostly simple, until reaching the 'projected' reel played behind the characters.

Ultimately I wanted to have something working in-renderer for Blender because I wanted accurate reflections from the projection to
appear on the reflective surfaces, and doing everything purely in composite might have not yielded the same result.
The solution here was to bind the projection as an emissive element to the wall, but have it's X-Y position on the wall dictated
by an empty box object which was placed in the middle of the room.

The City set, ironically, was much more straightforward: It's mostly just a composition of buildings with unique decorations on them,
flying cars operated by geometry nodes, and various character and prop animations.

MANGO 2021 PACKAGE

Largely "Marvel Studios' intro inspired, we decided to take Mang0's logo and turn it into a highlight reel of his stream's
funny notable moments, and Smash tournament accomplishments. A vector graphic of Mang0's logo was extruded,
then organized to have every different face show a different video clip. Small bits of motion graphic were eventually
added to finish the composition.
